The electricity consumption at the local community swimming pool has been reduced by 75 %, and Dag-Erik Antonsen has now installed the same technology in the brand new workshop and warehouse building at the local fish farm.
“Speaking of the heating of the building alone, I believe we have reduced the consumption by 80 to 85 %", says Antonsen. He is an energy consultant but has been engaged as a Project Manager for M. Arvesen Eiendom AS and the new building for the local fish farm.
Located north of the Arctic Circle on an island named Andørja in Troms municipality, a new heating central for the local community swimming pool has been renovated.
Before the project was initiated, I just presented a rough estimation of the expected cost saving to the landlord. In this case the result was unbelievable. He gives credit for all the savings to the products from Polar Energi AS, located on the neighboring island. “The cost savings from the energy efficiency is actually hard to believe, but well documented once the electricity bill arrives”.
“We don’t have a separate energy counter for the heating, but the total Electricity bill has been reduced from € 3.200 to € 800. However, this includes the running cost for the ventilation of the building, and the ventilation certainly takes a great share”.
The new “air to water” heat pump has now been installed at the local fish farm. “An energy calculation of the building is made to ensure that we meet the national standard and requirement. The result from this building is also much lower than expected”.
This «corner stone» business on the island built a new 1200 m2 workshop and warehouse. Due to an extreme height under the ceiling, the heating source of the building comes from Ecopan panels in the ceiling instead of underfloor heating.
“April this year should be considered as a cold winter month, and the electricity bill we received showed appox. € 700,-. This is about the same to be expected from two normal households, and way lower than what we had expected”.
The next project is a new headquarter for the local fish farm company, designed by Snøhetta.
Less is more He explains that the advantages come from the Polar Energi heat pump system. “We installed an electric boiler to support the heat pump system during the coldest days in winter. To our surprise, the electric boiler was never activated, as all the heating comes solely from the air to water heat pump itself”. Instead of going through an external plate heat exchanger, the heat transfer from the refrigerant to the water takes place inside the system tank. This makes the heat transfer much more effective. As the need of a plate heat exchanger and flow switch has been eliminated, the level of operational stability and durability has increased, says the producer. “Of course, the efficiency level increases once we remove such a big mechanical link from the chain of the heat transfer process”, says Dan-Erik Antonsen
